Seasons of Life

The following pictures are of the same place but taken under different seasons!! Please read the story at the end of these pictures.

There was a man who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.

The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall.

When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen.

The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted. The second son said no it was covered with green buds and full of promise.

The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen.

The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfillment.

The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life.

He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season, and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end, when all the seasons  are up.

If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, fulfillment of your fall.

Moral:

Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest.
Don't judge life by one difficult season.
Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come sometime or later.

Dear Sir,

Thanks for the advice and suggestion given by you on Saturday.

Yesterday I took some time for myself to re-think on what you and H.T. Bhat told me and felt it was very insignificant on my part to worry about things. You may also be glad to know that I have recorded your saying in writing for my future reference, when I feel I might require it.

From today you will see a new revived ‘me’ thinking in the lines as told by you, working for the present “now” and not worrying too much about past or future…

I feel light and thanks for that…

Regards,

Suprasaad

Dear Diary,

Today CB Sir had called me inquiring what was disturbing me.

The excerpts of the meeting are being reproduced here for my future reference and guidance.

CB Sir:
“This is not an official meeting but something personal. Yesterday Mr. H.T. Bhat was telling me that you are disturbed with something. I have nothing to do with your personal things. But since Mr. H.T. Bhat is close to me and your family is close to him, I asked him whether I could talk to you and so I thought I call you and talk to you.

I do not know what your problems are and I do not want to know if you have professional or personal related problems. But I want to tell you that there are so many problems which I have faced and all that has only hardened me.

In my life long experience, what I have learnt is LIFE is nothing but suffering. You may see a child when born cries because it is hungry. Later it is sorrow because it wants something and this goes on as a part of life.

We are all part of destiny; a mere pawns of chess in the hands of destiny. I do not believe in God and in my experience of life I understand that life is suffering.

HAPPINESS is only internal to us. It cannot be seen (like hunger) by others. It has to be experienced within. If I tell you to make a list of things that make you happy and if I provide you all those materialistic things, I am sure you shall not be happy until you feel internally. You further note that happiness based on materialistic things shall be momentary.

What is right or wrong cannot be judged by anyone. For instance yesterday, I was at my terrace when I saw an earthworm surrounded by ants. I could see the worm struggling. I thought I shall help the worm and hence took a leaf and rescued the worm from the ants. But then I was thinking have I done right in rescuing the worm. I realized that I am might be wrong. It could be that the ants were really hungry and the worm in final stages of life and the ants were more need of the worm to survive.

We need to work in the present (i.e. NOW). The past is dead and the future is unknown. Do not worry about the past nor think of the future. The destiny will decide everything.

Sometimes I feel we are foolish to say that we should be remembered after death. But what is the use of fame when you are not there to enjoy it.

Always do not expect anything for yourself and do not allow that to suppress you from achieving anything.

We are all part of a big universe. When seen from the macroscopic point, an ant and a man are equivalent. We are smaller than what atoms are now for us, when seen in the context of the universe. Then in that case our individual problems are insignificant to the whole universe.

I am the king of Dynaspede only for a small duration after which I do not know what will happen. But I live in now and destiny takes me where I should go.

I do not regret my past and believe in 2 principles. I do not lie and I do not do things which hurt others.

Finally I would say live for “NOW” and let destiny play its role. Good luck.”

Compete With Self

Have you ever thought about "Competition"?

I am sure the moment you think about this word; there is a chill in the spine for many... thinking about the efforts needed to put forth; while for a few, they like the excitement it brings in challenging the unknown participants... & outperforming them.

For most, the very definition of "Competition" is outclassing others in the foray, performing better than others, beating others....

In many cases "Competition" is the very scapegoat for any failure. People blame ‘tough competition’ or ‘increasing competition’ to hide their incompetence. The fear of competition is so heavy that some of us do not even try things which are within reach and easily achievable.

The process of competition can be turned into pleasant one if we shift our focus from- “I will beat all others to become number one in my field.” to “I will perform this time better than I performed last time on my chosen field/area. I will work on goals and deadlines defined by myself.”

The key to changed outlook is realistic goal setting and honest judgment of performance.

Consider the following advantages-

a)      Working with known - In place of worrying about unknown competitors and estimating their capabilities, you work on yourself. And you know (at least) yourself better. So the process becomes easy and manageable and you enjoy doing it.

b)      Control over goals & deadlines - You are the best judge of your capabilities, your environment and your limitations. So you can decide realistic goals and time frames to achieve these. These entities are not imposed on you from outside.

c)       Constant improvement - It is a never ending process. Once you achieve a goal you ‘raise the bar’ a little more.

d)      Win-Win situation – you are the only person involved in this process. You can not lose even if you don’t achieve your goal. In this case you will achieve less than expected results but still you are a gainer. Moreover, you will get a realization that either the goal was not realistic to achieve or the efforts were not enough. Here again you gain insight from your realization for better results next time.

No, it is not so easy to reprogram your mind, yet it is possible. The problems are -

1. Being honest with self - Having a candid self dialogue is the first hurdle. Our mind assume things which are less painful and thus we be-fool ourselves to avoid pain. Later, we take our assumptions for granted. It requires lot of courage to be honest with self. You have to clearly define for yourself-
(a) What area you want to improve
(b) Where do you stand now in this area
(c) Where do you want to reach
(d) Time frame to achieve your goal

2. Assessment of performance - Since I am the most favorite person for me, I lower the standards while assessing the performance of mine. So beware of this and have impartial judgment system/yardsticks.

3. Leaving comfort zone - We remain happy in our created comfort zone. So common experience is that we make resolutions but do not act on these. The process goes on; we repent on not achieving and make fresh resolutions. So after setting your goal(s) ,you have to accept it as a commitment and a project (not given by your boss or client this time)

So, if the above mentioned approach appeals you, give it a try. Don’t worry about ‘where you will reach’ following it. You will reach where you want to reach rather than reach a place which is dictated by market forces.

All the best.
